Rebel House
Sunday brunch is probably my favourite meal of the week. It’s filled with so much possibility. Do you go “ethnic”? Sweet? Savoury? The best of both worlds and do sweet AND savoury? Oh the possibilities.
For some reason in the 9 or so weeks that I’ve been back in Toronto I haven’t been to brunch (quelle horreur!). This was rectified with a trip to Rebel House on Yonge near Rosedale Station.
I was turned onto Rebel House by chowhound.com and have been obsessed with it ever since reading about it. It’s basically a pub. But not grungy, slightly more upscale. Not sure if it’s a “gastropub” but whatever it is, it’s fab.
The atmosphere is super warm and cozy and on Sunday during brunch hours they totally didn’t hassle us about sitting there for about an hour and a half just talking. New York this isn’t!
I wanted about half the things on the menu but settled for the “Tavern Breakfast”. 2 eggs any style. Bacon or Sausage. Toast. Oven roasted tomatoes. Baked beans. Sauteed mushrooms. AND fresh kettle chips. Seriously, they had me at bacon and won me over with baked beans and mushrooms. It was AMAZING. Seriously, amazing. The baked beans weren’t what I was used to (I think they used wine) BUT they were delicious. I could have used a side of them. Not sure what they did to the tomatoes but I could have eaten seriously a dozen of them. Kettle chips were yummy and were a nice change from home fries.
I was torn between the tavern breakfast and franglais toast which also sounded amazing. Trying to figure out who i can convince to come out to brunch next week so that i can try the toast. In a perfect world I’d have the tavern breakfast AND the franglais toast… but that would not be wise.
Also want to try them for their supposedly amazing sausages, meatloaf, fresh breads… pretty much everything.
